Daily Color Word Practice FREEBIE

Wow!  I am meeting so many new people through the Newbie Blog Hop.  I plan to check out everyone on the list over the next week or so.  I start back to work tomorrow - so sad summer is over for me!

I have great anxiety about starting school tomorrow.  My new room is still under construction and Back to School Night is Thursday - yes, Thursday!  Also, my mom went into the hospital last night with pneumonia and undiagnosed pain that they have not figured out yet.   They are treating her with antibiotics and pain meds and running tests.  She thinks she's going home Tuesday.  She says she just has too much to do to be in the hospital.  Like mother, like daughter!

So, this week is all about breathing deep, taking it one day at a time, and trusting God (and working some late nights).

I have a freebie for you today that I hope will be really useful for you.  I have a Daily Color Word Practice pack with 13 sheets of color word sentence writing practice.

This would be great for seat/bell work for the first couple of weeks of school if you use one sheet a day.  It would also be good for early finishers or to use with directed handwriting practice.  I do directed handwriting practice daily with first graders.  It helps so much.  I talk it out loud to them as we write together and I make a big deal about taking your time and doing your best.

So, I hope this is a very useful pack for you.  Click on the picture to get your free download.

Newbie Blog Hop ~ Hop On!

Like many of you out there I am new to blogging.  Grade Three is the Place for Me created this great blog hop to connect newbies to each other.  What a great idea!

Link up with me to share a little bit about yourself and then hop around to meet others.

Here are the questions:
    1.  what state you are in
    2.  your current teaching position
    3.  your teaching experience
    4.  when you started blogging
    5.  share a blogging tip / blogging resource

Here are my answers:
1.  I live in Arizona.
2.  I am teaching 6th-8th grade Science this coming year.
3.  I just started teaching 3 years ago after a long career in architecture   and design.  I did a post-bac program in K-8 education to become a teacher. I taught Kindergarten my first year and 1st grade the last two years.  So this year is a big leap!
4.  I started blogging at the end of February.  I had no idea how to get started, create a blog, leave a comment, link up, hop, tweet, grab or anything else.  It has been quite a learning curve!
5.  Teaching Blog Traffic School is a fantastic resource for new bloggers.  I haven't finished going through all of the courses yet and I have learned a ton.  It is a goal of mine to do all of the online courses and become a blogging afficionado this year.

Teaching Blog Traffic School
Another great resource is the Virtual Teaching Expo.  I signed up for the Blogging 101 event to help me get started in blogging.  They have other teaching events also to check out.  They are presented by Teaching Blog Addict and Teacher's Notebook.  Again, I haven't finished all of the videos in the event because it got me started and I am biting off pieces of it as I am ready to learn more.  That is the great thing about these resources - "When the student is ready, the master appears!"

Click on the picture below to read about the Blogging 101 Event.

I can't wait to hop around and meet all of you!

DIY Fabric Covered Bulletin Boards

Do you want bulletin boards that stay nice all year with no fuss? I have the solution.  Make your own fabric-covered bulletin boards that stay in new condition for years and flex with the seasons.

Get supply list and step by step directions over at Classroom DIY where I am blogging today.

Classroom DIY

This project is great because you can make a board to custom fit any size space that you have in the classroom.  I have them in all different sizes in my room.  You can tie the color of them all together, if you make more than one, or make them different colors.  The insulation board is very light and easy to work with.
I pick a neutral border trim that I leave up all year but you can change it to fit the theme of your board.  See one of my bulletin boards below used at Christmas and the same board again in April and May.  I promise you will love these!

Monday Made It Linky!

I am linking up with Tara from 4th Grade Frolics, Monday Made It linky.  She had 155 link ups last week so if you are looking for project inspiration you have got to go check out this linky party.

This is my first time to link up.  I am just getting started working on my classroom for this year.  I will be in a new room this year.  I have painted it and put up new window covering so far.  I will have to wait to start moving  my stuff in and organizing it because my charter school is housed in a church and they are using the room.  The room is also next door to the main office so it is also being used to house anything that doesn't fit in the office - uniforms, donated books, unwanted furniture, etc.

This was really stressing me out so I started on a small project to make me feel like I am doing something to get my room ready.

I decided to try covering my very ugly brown clipboards with scrapbook paper and modge podge.  This was a fun project and I love how they turned out.
First I made a paper template of the clipboard.
Next I cut out scrapbook paper to the shape of the pattern.  The paper is shorter than the pattern so I cut an additional piece of scrapbook paper to put at the bottom.
I planned out more clipboards with coordinating paper.
Here are 3 of the finished clipboards.  They are shiny because they are still drying.
I think I am really going to enjoy these!
Next I need to work on my wall words and bulletin boards.
Have fun teaching!

Currently

I am linking up with Farley's currently.
Here is what I am up to currently...

Living in Arizona, we don't get a lot or rain outside of the monsoon season.  So, I am really enjoying the afternoon rains in Colorado.  Everything is so lush and green and the flowers are absolutely beautiful.  It is so nice to be with my family and extended family.  My daughter and niece are 1 month apart in age, to the day, and they are inseparable when they get together.

I can't wait to watch the Olympics.  We haven't had cable TV for over 2 years and we got it again just for the Olympics (although now we are hooked on it and won't be able to give it up again any time soon).

This is the year that I would like to get in shape and reach my goal weight, so I am needing to get started.  I would like to get into some new habits before I start back to school again in a couple of weeks.

And, last but not least, I LOVE to read any Skippyjon Jones book aloud. I do the accent and sing the songs and I just love it.  Professionally, I am reading Fred Jones' Tools for Teaching to add to my classroom management  tool box before I start working with an older group of kids this year.

So, that is what I am doing currently.  I will be reading the other currently posts to see what everyone else is up to this summer.

There are over 300 link ups already at Oh' Boy 4th Grade, so, just in case you haven't read her post yet, she also has some very cute "Pledge of Allegiance" posters you can grab.  Thanks Farley!
